I AM-Fred Hampton
Fred Hampton was born on August 30, 1948 in Summit, Illinois. As a young boy he was gifted academically as well as athletically. He graduated with honors and majored in pre-law at Triton Junior College. He became active in the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People), specifically the youth programs. This is where Fred was able to help the black education system prosper as well establish new neighborhoods. He later became disappointed with the NAACP and began to look for something greater. In 1968 Hampton joined the Black Panther Party and soon became Deputy Chairman. His experience in law enforcement benefited the Black Panther Party tremendously, when dealing with police brutality. He served members of the black community daily, including free breakfast programs, free medical treatment for patients and political education classes taught by himself. He also led the rainbow coalition, a movement in which people of all ethnicity's came together to empower one another. Cointelpro was soon sanctioned by the government, it’s goal was to destroy the efforts of the black panther party. The Chicago Police Department raided the Black Panther Headquarters on December 4, 1969 at 4:00 am. 99 shots were fired into the building, causing his death. Policemen claimed that their shots were an act of self defense however, the investigation concluded that only one was shot by another Panther. Although he died young, he left a lifetime of work and legacy.
